VIRGINIA AARP SALUTES LVC VOLUNTEERS WITH AN "ENCHANTED" HOLIDAY FETE

The Virginia State AARP will recognize the nearly 300 volunteers that make up the Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers (LVC) with a Volunteer Appreciation Evening at Leesburg’s Tally Ho Theatre on December 12, from 6:45-9:30 p.m.

Volunteers will be acknowledged for their support of LVC’s “Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Need” programs and treated to a private showing of the holiday hit “Enchanted” and a post-show reception at the Market Street Coffee House.

"This annual event is a great opportunity to give a little holiday cheer back to the volunteers who bring cheer to Loudoun seniors throughout the year," says AARP Associate State Director, Amber Nightingale. The Virginia State AARP began hosting the Volunteer Recognition Evening in 2003, after many Loudoun-based AARP members started serving as LVC volunteers.

With more than 270 volunteers, LVC provides assistance to frail elderly and disabled adults through a wide range of services. “From transportation to

appointments and friendly visits to helping seniors manage their finances in conjunction with the AARP Foundation Money Management Program, our volunteers help seniors whose needs are not met by any other area agency,” says LVC Executive Director, Nancy Sutton.

This year, volunteers have already provided more than 6,500 hours of service and logged nearly 46,000 miles in assisted transportation.

LEESBURG, VA -- Automotive safety and dependability: Those words strike a cord with motorists and have prompted four local organizations to sponsor vehicle check lanes during April National Car Care Month. The event, coming to the Rte. 7 Leesburg Plaza Shopping Center on April 8, 2006 from 8 am to 1 pm features free inspection of tires, fluids, filters and other aspects of their vehicles that can affect safety, dependability and/or emissions. The primary beneficiary of this event, Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers, is a non-profit organization who brought free services such as transportation to disabled/home-bound Loudoun County residents with more than 60,000 miles driven last year alone, according to LVC president Nance Sutton.

“A neglected vehicle can be dangerous to drive,” said Joel Burrows, aka the Car Doctor and VP of Technical Training/R&D for Precision Tune Auto Care. “Finding mechanical discrepancies and reporting them to the owners is the main goal of this program. Poor maintenance also can cost car owner’s excessive operational and repair costs.” The Car Care Council, coordinator of National Car Care Month, says this essentially is an educational program. “Public awareness can help cut down on motorists’ preventive maintenance procrastination,” says executive director, Rich White. “The check lanes provide valuable information to reinforce our Be Car Care Aware consumer education campaign.”

Motorists who participate in this event can expect to receive not only a vehicle check-up, but also a free child safety check as well as a goody bag with promotional discounts and a chance to win “door” prizes donated by local retailers. “It is our way to give back to the community and help the driving public feel empowered with information,” explained Ron Bloom from Advance Auto Parts. This event is being organized by co-sponsors Precision Tune Auto Care, Inc. and the Leesburg branch of Advance Auto Parts, as well as participation by automotive technicians through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Monroe Vo-Tech, all Virginia-based automotive corporations with ties to the Leesburg community.

National Campaign to focus support on caregivers

Just over 46 million Americans (22 % of U.S. population) are providing unpaid care to an adult relative or friend, finds a recent survey. Conducted for Johnson & Johnson by Opinion Research Corporation, the October phone survey of 1,018 adults also reinforces what researchers have known: Most people are not prepared to become family caregivers.

In fact, 58% of respondents say they are only somewhat or not at all prepared to handle health insurance matters for an adult family member or friend; 56% say they are unprepared to assist medications; and 64% worry about selling the home of a loved one and moving that person to another location or setting up a will or trust for that person. In conjunction with the survey, Johnson & Johnson, the U.S. Surgeon General and major caregiving organizations are launching a new campaign to assist and support caregivers. Information materials and expert advice are available at the campaign's website: strengthforcaring.com.
